The entire building is a large castle where the heart of this protection is, but because of the unique shape, which form the highest point, the entire fortress called the Citadel of Bam.

December 26, 2003, the fort was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake, along with most of Bam and surrounding areas. A few days after this earthquake, President Mohammad Khatami announced that the fort was rebuilt immediately.
