The Pui Tak Center (lines: ; Pinyin: Pid), formerly known as the On Leong Merchants Association Building (also known as the Pile o' rice restaurant), is a nineteenth century converted commercial house located in Chicago's Chinatown that serves as the primary point of contact for immigrants from China to the United States. Built in ornate and Gothic architecture, the Pui Tak Center has been named one of the National Historic Landmarks by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. In fact, it was declared as such by former President Bill Clinton in 1997. One of Chicago's most prestigious dining establishments, the Pui Tak Center has been entertaining dignitaries, celebrities and tourists for over one hundred years. The main entrance of the Pui Tak Center is adorned with an American flag; inside, a grand Chinese opera house with red carpet and plush surroundings plays enchanting ballets; and on the second floor, the Theater of the Americas (Taqco) overlooks the lake and the nearby Chinese Garden.
Established in the mid-Qing Dynasty (the earliest one hundred years ago), the Pui Tak Center is one of the oldest Chinese community organizations in the USA. Established by the Christian minister Weng Yip, the Pui Tak Center was created to assist the growing Chinese community in Chicago. In the early years, the Pui Tak Center had the mission of aiding immigrants integrate into the US society by offering them a haven to live and engage in their American culture. Today, the Pui Tak Center serves a largely different function-of providing sanctuary for the spiritual and intellectual development of its mostly poorer and immigrant community members, while at the same time developing a strong sense of identity for the people of Chicago (the majority of whom are either US citizens or permanent resident alien).
