Rotterdam, is a Dutch gemeente located in the province of Noord Holland. In the year 2006 this region has a population of (official) for 588,500 inhabitants. Approximately 35% to 40% of the population of this port city from overseas.
Gemeente is a term in Dutch and is an administrative division name and with it a scientific term state structure. In the Indonesian language is more or less word can be translated as "municipality". In the Dutch colonial era, a municipality also called gemeente, and its leader is burgemeester (mayor).
In addition to a municipality, gemeente can also be interpreted as a congregation of the Church.
Besides being used in the Netherlands, the term is also (ever) used in the former Dutch territory, such as Indonesia, Belgium, and Surinam.
